One-Day Applied Sport Psychology Workshop
INTERVENTION TECHNIQUES FOR 21st CENTURY SPORT AND EXERCISE PSYCHOLOGISTS
It is our honour to invite you to participate in workshop which will be held by distinguished Professor Dr. Costas Karagheorghis, a Reader in Sport Psychology at the Department of Life Sciences at Brunel University London, and the author of popular book Inside sport psychology.
The Workshop will take place on Friday 15th of May 2015, from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM with a lunch break in-between morning and afternoon session.
The workshop will be held in English.
Short description of workshop:
This one-day applied workshop will be delivered in three distinct parts and is designed to meet the needs of the aspiring sport and exercise psychologist. The first session of the morning (90 min.) will cover techniques that are aimed at bolstering self-confidence and self-efficacy. Specific types of intervention that will be covered include forms of positive self-talk, recreating the 'winning feeling' and the Spotlight of Excellence. The second session of the morning (90 min.) will examine intervention techniques that address anxiety and performance-related stress. Elements that will be covered include use of the Mental Preparation Profile, active and passive relaxation techniques, and team plans for coping with adversity. The afternoon session (two sessions of 90 min.) will be devoted to the presenter's specialist field of scientific endeavour, which is music-related interventions. During the first half of the afternoon, exercise-related interventions will be addressed, while sport-related interventions will form the mainstay of the second half. The interventions will be illustrated with examples from the field in order to demonstrate their applicability. It is anticipated that most of the techniques presented in the afternoon session will be alien to the workshop participants, so through the course of the day, both commonly used and more unusual interventions will be expounded. The workshop will be highly interactive in nature and there will be ample opportunity for questions and group discussion. For the afternoon's activities, workshop participants will need to bring along a personal music player (e.g., an iPod or a smartphone) to facilitate their engagement.
